About the Park:
Kumana National Park is situated on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. In 1938, this area, which was then part of the eastern section of Yala Wildlife Reserve, was recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s premier bird nesting and breeding sites and was designated as Kumana Sanctuary. In 2006, the sanctuary was separated from Yala National Park and officially named ‘Kumana National Park’.

Every year from April to July, Kumana becomes a haven for tens of thousands of birds from around the globe, offering abundant opportunities to observe a wide variety of bird species. Visitors can spot White-breasted Waterhen, Duck, Black-crowned Night Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Purple Swamphen, and Common Moorhen. These large flocks create a spectacular sight, making a Kumana safari an unforgettable experience.
