A Jeep Ride to Remember

The day began with a thrilling jeep ride that set the tone for the adventure ahead. Our driver, a friendly local, navigated the winding roads with ease, taking us through the lush rainforest and along the famous Fig Tree Drive. This route, lined with tropical fruit trees, was a feast for the senses. The scent of ripe mangoes and coconuts filled the air, and the vibrant colors of the guavas and oranges were a sight to behold. At one point, my hat flew off in the breeze, and our driver graciously stopped to retrieve it, adding a touch of humor to the journey. We even made a pit stop to purchase some of the island’s renowned black pineapple, a sweet treat that I highly recommend.

Kayaking Through Mangroves

Arriving at South Coast Horizons, we were greeted by Candier, who was incredibly accommodating as we adjusted our plans to include a half-day tour and lunch. The kayaking portion of the tour was a unique experience, offering a serene paddle through the mangrove lagoon. The water was calm, and the mangroves provided a canopy of shade, making it a peaceful escape from the sun. Along the way, we spotted numerous fiddler crabs scuttling along the banks, their tiny claws waving in the air. It was a short but memorable journey, unlike anything else I’d experienced on the island.

Snorkeling at Cades Reef

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the snorkeling adventure at Cades Reef. Our guide, James, led us to this vibrant underwater world, where we were fortunate to have the reef all to ourselves. The water was crystal clear, revealing a kaleidoscope of colorful fish darting among the coral. James was attentive and knowledgeable, pointing out various marine species and ensuring we had the best possible experience. After snorkeling, another guide took us on a short hike to a viewpoint overlooking the reef. He even found some cactus fruit for us to try, adding a local flavor to the excursion. The day concluded with a delicious Caribbean lunch of chicken, rice, and salad, enjoyed on the beautiful shores of Cades Bay. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day.
