The first stop will be in Ollantaytambo to use the restrooms and enjoy breakfast.
Piscacucho - The journey continues to Piscacucho, km 82, the starting point of the trek where the team, including the cook and porters, will be met. With passports ready, the group will pass through the first checkpoint on the Inca Trail and begin the hike with a gentle ascent.
Patallacta - The trek involves three hours on relatively flat terrain, following the river’s course, with stunning views of the snow-capped La Verónica (5,750 m). Lunch and a rest will be taken in Miskay.
Wayllabamba - The trek continues to the Inca town of Llactapata, where the impressive agricultural terraces of the complex can be admired. The Inca Trail proceeds along the left bank of the Cusichaca River to the town of Huayllabamba, where the group will camp and have dinner.
Huayllabamba - Warmiwañuska (Dead Woman’s Pass) - Pacaymayu
Llulluchapampa - The day begins at 6:00 am with hot coca tea delivered to the tents to prepare for the day’s hike. After breakfast, the camp is left at 07:00 hrs. The uphill walk through Llulluchapampa offers the chance to see various bird species, including hummingbirds, falcons, or black-breasted eagles.
Dead Woman - The trail then passes through a beautiful cloud forest filled with Qeuña trees before entering the Puna, an area characterized by treeless grasslands found only at this altitude across the Andes. Hikers are encouraged to walk at their own pace, taking breaks to catch their breath or stretch. The final challenging climb leads to the highest pass on the Inca trail at Warmiwañuska.
Spectacular views of the Andes and snow-covered peaks await, as the hike continues across the slopes on the left side of the valley towards the camp in Pacaymayu (3600 meters above sea level).
Pacaymayu - Runkuraqay - Sayacmarca - Phuyupatamarca - Wiñayhuayna
Runkuracay - After a hearty breakfast, a steady climb begins towards the second highest pass at Runkuraqay.
Sayacmarca - Sayacmarca, meaning “inaccessible city,” is reached via the only Inca road, now a monumental structure of granite stones, passing through layers of cloud forests filled with rare orchids, hanging mosses, bromeliads, and ferns. After the Inca tunnel, a gentle climb leads to the third pass at 3700 meters above sea level, offering incredible views of several snow-capped peaks, including Salkantay.
Puyupatamarca - The ruins of Phuyupatamarca are explored, with a brief explanation of the mysteries of Inca architecture. The journey continues to the impressive agricultural site of Intipata before reaching the final camp.
Winay Wayna - Wiñayhuayna is the last official camp before Machu Picchu, where farewells are made to the cooks and porters, as the journey continues to Machu Picchu the next day.
Wiñaywayna - Intipunku - Machu Picchu
Winay Wayna - An early start at around 4:00 am ensures arrival at Inti Punku (the Gate of the Sun) to witness Machu Picchu with the first rays of the sun. This 1-2 hour hike includes significant upward stretches in the last half. Walking in the dark requires a flashlight, and the trail is clearly marked, taking approximately 1½ hours.
The trail follows the mountain’s side and descends into cloud forest before reaching a nearly vertical flight of 50 steps leading to the final pass.
Inti Punku Sungate - A short final walk leads to the entrance and the heart of Machu Picchu itself, where the history of its construction is shared.
Machu Picchu - Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, a guided tour lasting approximately 2 to 2:30 hours is provided, with additional time for personal exploration. The bus ticket from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes is included, with buses departing every 15 minutes for the descent to Aguas Calientes.
