Its appeal as an entertainment hub and its closeness to Osaka have made Shirahama one of Japan’s top three onsen resorts, alongside Beppu in Kyushu and Atami on the Izu Peninsula.
The name Shirahama translates to “white beach” in Japanese, highlighting the resort’s other main attraction, a 500-meter-long sandy beach. Numerous large hotels are positioned around the beach, ensuring guests are just steps away from the water. During the summer, nightly fireworks light up the sky.
- Sandanbeki Cave - Just a few kilometers apart, the rugged cliffs of Sandanbeki present a striking saw-toothed contrast to the pristine white sands of Shirarahama Beach. This area is known for its dramatic geology, where the powerful Pacific Ocean waves crash into the cliffs, creating a spectacular sea spray.
- Engetsuto - Avant-garde and romantic art installations crafted by Mother Nature
Along the Shirahama coastline, Mother Nature has used the mighty Pacific Ocean to create some avant-garde art installations, such as the jagged cliffs of Sandanbeki. However, her artistic versatility is also evident in the romantic sculpture on the island of Engetsuto.
- Senjojiki - Walk out to sea on the smooth stones of Senjojiki’s “one thousand tatami mats”
Over millennia, the Pacific Ocean waves have continuously shaped the Wakayama coastline, forming impressive clusters of jagged rock formations. Despite their rugged appearance, the surfaces are smooth, offering a unique coastal hiking experience.
Quick Facts
