Situated 41 km northwest of Phnom Penh, Phnom Udong served as Cambodia’s royal capital from 1618 to 1866. This revered mountain, perched on twin hills overlooking the Kandal plains, is adorned with ancient stupas and temples that pay tribute to former Khmer kings and house sacred relics.

Visitors ascend over 500 stone steps to reach the peak, where magnificent structures like the Preah Shakyamuni Chedi, constructed in 2002 to enshrine Buddha’s relics, stand alongside older stupas such as Damrei Sam Poan and Ang Duong. Among these monuments is Vihear Preah Edthareus, a sanctuary bearing the scars of Cambodia’s turbulent history.
