In the afternoon, explore Oudong, which served as the royal capital from 1618 to 1866 before the capital was relocated to Phnom Penh. Several temples and stupas are spread across three hills. These impressive stupas, visible from miles away, house the remains of several Khmer kings, including King Monivong (1927-1941) and King Ang Duong (1845-1859). Climbing over 500 steps to the top of the hill offers excellent exercise and a breathtaking view of the countryside. These hills were also significant during the Khmer Rouge’s prolonged resistance against the Vietnamese army in 1979, and a memorial for those killed by the Khmer Rouge has been erected here.
