• Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau - Globally, Auschwitz stands as a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust. Established by the Germans in 1940, it was located in the suburbs of Oswiecim, a Polish city annexed by the Nazis to the Third Reich. The name was changed to Auschwitz, which also became the name of Konzentrationslager Auschwitz.
  Auschwitz I. The first and oldest was the so-called “main camp,” later known as “Auschwitz I” (the number of prisoners fluctuated around 15,000, sometimes exceeding 20,000), which was set up on the grounds and in the buildings of prewar Polish barracks.
• Memorial and Museum Auschwitz II-Birkenau - Auschwitz II. The second section was the Birkenau camp (which held over 90,000 prisoners in 1944), also referred to as “Auschwitz II.” This was the largest part of the Auschwitz complex. The Nazis began its construction in 1941 on the site of the village of Brzezinka, three kilometers from Oswiecim. The Polish civilian population was displaced, and their homes were seized and demolished. The majority of the mass extermination apparatus was constructed in Birkenau, where most of the victims were killed.
