As someone who has spent years curating high-end travel experiences, I was intrigued by the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary’s commitment to ethical tourism. Our guide, Dannis, was a fountain of knowledge and passion. His dedication to the sanctuary and its residents was evident as he led us through the grounds. We were introduced to Chaba, one of the sanctuary’s gentle giants, and had the privilege of feeding her. This intimate interaction was a highlight of the visit, offering a glimpse into the unique personalities of these incredible animals.

A Stroll Through Paradise

Equipped with socks, boots, and repellent, we embarked on a guided walk through the sanctuary. The elephants roamed freely, a testament to the sanctuary’s commitment to allowing them to live as naturally as possible. Observing them bathe and socialize without human interference was a refreshing departure from the typical tourist experience.

As we meandered through the sanctuary, we encountered several elephants, each with their own story and dedicated carer. The sanctuary’s expansive grounds provide ample space for the elephants to explore, and it was heartening to see them interact in a manner reminiscent of their wild counterparts.

Our visit concluded with a sumptuous vegetarian Thai lunch, a fitting end to a morning that was as nourishing for the soul as it was for the body.
