- Palatupana - YALA (යාල) National Park is the most frequented and second-largest national park in Sri Lanka, located along the Indian Ocean.
Yala National Park is home to 44 species of mammals, including the Sri Lankan Elephant, and boasts one of the highest leopard densities globally, with numerous leopards estimated to roam in Block I. The elephant herd in Yala consists of 100–150 individuals. The park also shelters threatened mammals such as the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, Leopard, Elephant, and Wild Water Buffalo. Although water buffaloes are native to Sri Lanka, many populations have genes from domestic stock or have descended from feral groups. The elephant population in the park changes with the seasons.
The first two hours of the morning and the last two hours of the day are prime times for spotting leopards.
Leopards and bears are rare animals. Full-day and half-day (7-hour) safari tours are recommended to increase the chances of seeing leopards.
Morning and evening safari tours are also excellent for observing a variety of animals, depending on the day’s sightings. Please remember, this is wildlife!
