Exploring Double Island: A Kayak Adventure with Turtles and Dolphins

Drawn by the promise of an eco-friendly adventure, I embarked on the Kayak Turtle Tour from Palm Cove. With the allure of marine life and the chance to explore Double Island, I was eager to experience this sustainable journey firsthand.

Setting Sail from Palm Cove

As someone who has spent years advocating for sustainable tourism, I am always on the lookout for eco-friendly adventures that allow travelers to connect with nature without leaving a heavy footprint. The Kayak Turtle Tour from Palm Cove was a perfect fit. Departing from the picturesque 73 Williams Esplanade, we paddled our way over to the coral reefs that fringe Double Island and Haycock Island, also known as Scouts Hat. The anticipation of spotting marine life was palpable as we set off across the crystal-clear waters.

Our guide, Andy, was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the local ecosystem. As we glided over the shallows of a reef, we were greeted by the sight of green and hawksbill turtles basking in the ocean. It was a gentle reminder of the importance of preserving these natural habitats. The calm turquoise waters, a result of the favorable wind direction, made for a serene paddling experience.

Discovering Hidden Gems

One of the highlights of the tour was our visit to a small beach on Double Island. Here, we climbed to a vantage point that offered a breathtaking view of the mainland. The sense of tranquility was overwhelming, and it was a moment to reflect on the beauty of our planet. Andy then led us to a cave, where he patiently guided each kayak inside. Inside the cave, we learned about the tides, the formation of stalactites, and the small bats that call this place home. It was an unexpected treat that added a layer of intrigue to our adventure.

As we emerged from the cave, we were met with an extraordinary sight—four dolphins swimming right beside us. It was a magical encounter that underscored the richness of marine life in this region. We spent a blissful ten minutes watching these graceful creatures before continuing our journey around the island.

A Taste of the Past

Our next stop was the resort beach, where the remnants of an infamous resort still stand. The derelict buildings serve as a poignant reminder of the impact of human activity on natural landscapes. Andy took us on a tour of this part of the island, sharing stories of its past glory. It was a sobering yet fascinating experience.

Before heading back to Palm Cove, we had the opportunity to savor fresh rock oysters, expertly shucked by Andy. It was a delightful way to end our tour, connecting us to the local flavors of the region. After a refreshing swim, we paddled back to the mainland, our hearts full of gratitude for the incredible experience.

The Kayak Turtle Tour is a testament to the beauty of sustainable travel. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the coast and marine life while respecting the environment. For those seeking an adventure that aligns with eco-conscious values, this tour is a must-do.
