The Hams Caves, which are over 10 million years old, have been accessible to the public since their discovery in 1905 by speleologist Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (1886-1950). He found them while searching for onyx, a precious stone prevalent in the area.

In 1910, he successfully generated electricity to light up the cave, even before the village of Porto Cristo had electric power. By utilizing a water mill, a dynamo, and a water tank, he was able to produce 16 hours of electric current, allowing visitors to explore the caves.

In the Blue Cave, visitors can marvel at the stunning new blue lighting created with LED technology and enjoy the educational documentary “Discovering the Past,” which covers the history of Majorca, its earliest inhabitants, the formation of the Hams Caves, and their discovery.
