- Palmer - Following the visit to the center, the walking tour of downtown Palmer will begin, featuring stops at local monuments and historic buildings. At each location, participants will gain insights into the Matanuska Colony Project and its lasting impact on the quaint town of Palmer. The tour will conclude back at the Palmer Visitor Center, where suggestions for additional activities in the Palmer area will be provided.

In the 1930s, Palmer’s identity as a farming community was solidified through the Matanuska Colony Project. Over 200 families moved to the Palmer area as part of the New Deal initiative. Many of the downtown buildings in Palmer were constructed during this era.
Participants will journey back in time, discovering what made the area so appealing to farmers, how the project developed, and the lasting impact it had on the town.
The tour includes a leisurely 1-mile walk along paved sidewalks through Palmer’s historic district, with visits to 2-3 historic buildings.
