Upon arrival in Pamplona, the capital of Navarre, the city’s rich and turbulent history is evident at nearly every turn. Founded by the Romans on a large plateau in the 1st century B.C., Pamplona was under Visigoth and Muslim control from the 4th to the 9th century, and later became the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre during the Middle Ages. Today, Pamplona is a vibrant university city renowned for the colorful San Fermin celebrations.
- Casco Viejo - From the parking area, we will head directly to the Historic Part street, where the famous bull run takes place. Residents along the route rent out their private balconies to visitors during the festivities, offering the best views of the run! The hosts not only welcome us into their homes but also prepare breakfast for us!
The bull run, known as ‘encierro,’ is a thrilling event where hundreds of people run ahead of a herd of bulls through the narrow streets of Pamplona’s Historic Part. The run concludes at the bullring, where the bulls are kept until the afternoon’s bullfight. During this time, the guide will share insights into the history of the bull runs and the various celebrations happening during the festival.
- Plaza de Toros de Pamplona - After witnessing the event, we will leave our balcony and walk approximately half a mile from Corrales de Santo Domingo, where the run begins, to the bullring, where it ends. During San Fermin, the city is a sight to behold, with festivities lasting a week. For many locals, the morning is the most cherished and enjoyable time of the day. Like them, we will conclude our morning with a delightful serving of churros and thick hot chocolate at a local café!
By 11:00 a.m., we will be ready to return and enjoy a scenic drive back to San Sebastian!
