Hierapolis & Pamukkale - This tour leads you to ancient cultural sites from the eras of the Lycians, Carians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, early Christians, and Seljuks. Hierapolis (ancient Greek “Holy City,” sometimes referred to as Hieropolis) was a Greek city in the Phrygia region of Asia Minor. Although the city likely existed earlier, as suggested by the old Cybele cult, the earliest evidence dates back to the 3rd century BC when it was reestablished by Antiochus II, along with its neighboring city Laodikeia on the Lycus. Older settlement traces are buried under travertine layers.
Landmarks:
• Odeon from Hadrian’s era
• The agora
• The nymphaeum
• City gates south & Domitian
• The main cobbled street
• Temple buildings
• Roman baths (some converted into religious buildings in early Christian times)
• The necropolis
Necropolis:
Over 1200 graves are located in front of Hierapolis’s north gate, making it the largest ancient necropolis in Asia Minor.
-
Laodicea - Situated about 5 kilometers from Denizli province and approximately 11 kilometers south of Hierapolis, this ancient city offers a perfect alternative to the crowded Pamukkale. The Lykus River, known locally as Çürüksu ırmak, was a tributary of the Meander and was vital to the ancient city of Laodikeia, also spelled Laodicea.
