This outing is likely the highlight for the group, thanks to its exceptional blend of history, culture, gastronomy, folklore, fun, and entertainment.
The remarkable adventure begins at Yialasi Beach, just a short walk from the center of Epidaurus. Participants will paddle westward to the renowned Sunken City, also referred to as Argolida’s Lost Atlantis, offering a stunning view of the majestic Volcano of Methana. Constructed in 500 AC, remnants of the city are visible, with some areas still preserving the ancient breakwater. Walls, building foundations, large amphorae, and paved sections lie submerged, meters below sea level, and only a few meters from the shore. With a depth of just two meters, it is an ideal spot for underwater sightseeing, snorkeling, and photography.
Upon reaching the seabed, masks will be provided to swim among the ancient ruins, capture photos, observe the vibrant fish, and personally experience the aura and unique healing energy of Epidaurus (Epidaurus: the place where the aura works).
Once persuaded to move on, the next stop is the Little Theatre of Epidaurus, located in an area called Nisi, near the port of Palea Epidaurus. Originally the theatre of the ancient city-state, it hosted drama performances as well as religious and political celebrations. Discovered in the early 1970s beneath an olive tree field, its restoration continues today.
Construction began in the 4th century B.C. to meet the needs of the small city-state, resulting in a modest size. It featured 9 tiers and 18 rows of seats, accommodating about 2,000 spectators. Some seats bear inscriptions indicating dedication to the god Dionysus and were built in sections. During Roman times, the theatre was extensively reformed: the orchestra became semi-circular, and the seating was rearranged. However, it is believed that the Little Theatre of Epidaurus was operational for only seven centuries since its construction, as historian Pausanias, who visited in the mid-2nd century BC, did not mention it.
Following extensive excavations and restoration over recent decades, the Epidaurus Little Theatre now hosts the annual Greek Festival, celebrated in summer with music, dance, and theatre performances. It currently seats 800 spectators, with ongoing efforts to restore more. Performances are primarily in modern or ancient Greek.
Concluding the journey, participants will explore gastronomy by visiting “Athina EcoFarm.” Here, they will relax, unwind, and savor a delightful meal made from local organic products, cultivated in the traditional way.
After gaining insights into ancient Greek culinary heritage, cultivation, and harvesting, the group will return to the starting point, having experienced an unforgettable journey through history, taste, and culture.
