Start: February 9-12, 2026. Panama City - Boqueron Arriba
Boqueron - This morning, the group boards a private van heading towards the village of Boqueron Arriba, situated north of Lake Alajuela in a key area of the Panama Canal Watershed. The journey takes approximately two hours, transitioning from asphalt to dirt roads until vehicles can no longer pass. The group hikes up to a ridge along the Boqueron River, where they immediately discover archaeological evidence of the ancient Camino Real. After covering about 8 km (5 miles), they reach the quaint village of Santa Librada. Here, they familiarize themselves with jungle camping gear and spend the night, eagerly anticipating the adventures of the following day.
Chagres National Park
Chagres National Park - The adventure continues with a hike through farmland and scattered thatch huts, gradually moving into less developed areas until reaching the untouched rainforest of Chagres National Park. Along the route, the group crosses the Boqueron River several times, taking breaks to interpret the natural surroundings and visible remnants of the historic Camino Real. These pauses also aid in acclimating to the jungle’s heat and humidity, with refreshing swims in crystal-clear river pools. Mornings are typically sunny, with brief afternoon showers—being wet is part of the experience. After 10 km (6 miles), they arrive at “Ambush Falls,” where the river divides into three small waterfalls, creating a serene pool beside a wide beach. It’s an ideal spot to camp and unwind after a fulfilling day’s hike.
Chagres National Park
Chagres National Park - Today, the group prepares to tackle the most dense and technical section of the trek. They hike through pristine and lush primary forest, climbing a ridge along the path once traversed by Spaniards carrying valuable silver and gold. The group camps in the jungle once more, spending the last hours of daylight sharing tales of Spaniards and pirates before retiring for a well-earned rest.
Chagres National Park - Portobelo - Panama City
Portobelo - On the fourth and final day, after enjoying a delightful cup of jungle coffee and a hearty breakfast, the group breaks camp and embarks on a 13 km (8 miles) trek to the outskirts of Portobelo. Here, they savor a delicious lunch, accompanied by a cold beer. They change into their spare set of street clothes and take a van ride back to Panama City.
