- Gatun Lake - Barro Colorado Island emerged with the creation of Lake Gatun in 1913 during the Panama Canal’s construction. Annually, more than 400 scientists visit this rainforest-covered living laboratory.
- Centro de Interpretacion de Ciudad del Saber - Formerly Fort Clayton, the City of Knowledge is located northwest of Balboa, Panama, near the Panama Canal. It was closed in 1999 following the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The Southern Command Network and 193rd Infantry Brigade were headquartered here, as was the United States Army South before relocating to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. The 534th Military Police Battalion, stationed here, was partly responsible for law enforcement on all Pacific side military installations. The base also provided substantial housing for military families and numerous barracks, with parts of the installation overlooking the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal.
