This tour begins with a pick-up from your accommodation or a designated meeting point. The town of Papeete was officially established in 1890, but its origins date back to 1820 when Pastor Crook constructed a church on the waterfront, now the site of the main Protestant church. Prior to this, the area was uninhabited, as Papeete means “water basket.” The region is abundant with natural springs, including one known as the Queen’s Bath, located in the government or Assembly gardens. Visit the Presidential Palace to learn about the government and the history of becoming French in the 1840s, and how this influences contemporary Polynesian life. Choose to drive by or walk past the street art from the Cathedral to the Papeete Town Hall, which is designed in the style of Queen Pomare VI’s palace, before enjoying a guided tour of the market’s lower level, followed by approximately 30 minutes for shopping. If desired, the tour can conclude with a brief visit to the Pearl Museum before returning to your accommodation, unless you prefer to stay in town for lunch or dinner.
