- Arahurahu Marae - The tour begins at 9:00 AM from your hotel, with the first stop at an archaeological site. Some of Tahiti’s most mystical places are on land, including the stone marae (temples) revered by ancient Polynesians. Visiting a marae is the best way to understand ancient Polynesian culture. Today, most marae are stone piles, but before Europeans arrived in the 18th century, they were centers for social, political, and religious activities, including human sacrifice. Our guide will lead you through this sacred site.
- Maraa Grotto - Following the Arahurahu Marae, at approximately 10:10 AM, we will visit the Maraa Grotto. We will walk through a rainforest with lush freshwater pools, small caves, and the dripping grotto itself, surrounded by ferns, which Paul Gauguin mentioned in his letters. (easy terrain)
- Taharuu Beach - Traveling along the west coast, we will stop around 11:00 AM at Taharuu surf beach, a black sand beach on Tahiti’s west coast. The area is stunning, with many palms and trees. Often, there are strong waves suitable for beginner surfers.
- The Water Gardens of Vaipahi - Around 11:45 AM, we will visit the Vaipahi Gardens, located along Tahiti’s southern coast in Mataiea. The Vaipahi Gardens are a lush paradise, featuring over 75 plant species from around the world (with signs and information in English and French), exotic flowers, a lily pond, and streams winding through the area. Visitors have praised the well-maintained natural attraction, its tranquility, easy trails, small waterfalls, and vibrant flora.
- Taravao Plateau - After the Vaipahi Gardens, we will head to the small island of Tahiti Iti for lunch (estimated arrival: 12:45 PM). Enjoy a 270° view of the Big Island of Tahiti from the Taravao belvedere on Tahiti Iti. Lunch will be at the plateau, with the option to choose a different restaurant. (Lunch is at each participant’s expense)
- Vairao - After lunch, around 2:10 PM, we will take a 20-minute scenic drive along Tahiti Iti, stopping at a local spot to feed the sacred eels (approximately 30 eels).
- Faarumai Waterfalls - At 2:40 PM, after feeding the eels in Vairao, we will embark on a scenic 40-minute ride from Tahiti Iti to the east coast of the Big Island of Tahiti. We will visit the highest waterfall in Faarumai Valley. Through the village of Tiarei, where the road curves around a black-sand beach, it’s a few hundred meters through a chestnut tree forest to the Vaimahutu waterfalls. (Sneakers and bug spray recommended)
- Arahoho Blowhole - At 3:55 PM, we will stop at the blowhole, where locals can be seen bodyboarding. The right swell conditions create a geyser-like fountain of water, impressively emerging from the blowhole. Just beyond the blowhole, there’s a beautiful black-sand beach, perfect for a picnic.
- Point Venus - At 4:10 PM, we will conclude our tour at the most popular black sand beach on Tahiti’s east coast. Point Venus is a peninsula on Tahiti’s north coast and was a primary objective of James Cook’s first voyage. With its large black sand beach, emerald waters, mythical lighthouse, and rich history, Point Venus is notable. MGM Hollywood filmed the famous movie “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando on Point Venus beach. At 5:00 PM, we will return you to your respective hotels.
