First mentioned in 1027, it belonged to Norman Duke Richard III. Ownership changed several times during the Hundred Years’ War, with French pirates and corsairs raiding the English coast. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the city prospered through trade with American colonies. After the port’s closure, Honfleur’s economy declined, becoming a suburb of Le Havre. Today, it is one of Normandy’s most popular tourist destinations.
