- Thumboormuzhi Dam & Garden - Thumboormuzhi Dam and Garden is a key component of the Ezattumugham Prakrithi Gramam project. This project features a hanging bridge, which is the main highlight, along with a butterfly garden, children’s play area, and a watchtower offering views of the river. The hanging bridge is particularly popular as it allows visitors to see the Chalakudi River flowing beneath their feet, providing a unique vantage point for photography. The butterfly park is another notable attraction. Located before the Athirapally Waterfalls on the Kochi to Athirapally route, this is an ideal spot for photography and family outings.
Thumboormuzhi Travel Tips:
• Entry fee is Rs 40 for adults and Rs 10 for children.
• Parking is available within the park.
• Visit this site either before or after seeing Athirapally. The park and butterfly garden close at 4:30 PM.
- Athirappilly Waterfalls - Experience Kerala’s largest waterfall, standing at 84 feet tall.
Athirapally Waterfalls Travel Tips:
• Open from 8:00 AM, with entry closing at 4:30 PM. Entry fee is Rs 40 for adults, Rs 10 for children, and Rs 150 for foreigners.
• The best time to visit is after the monsoon, from August to February, ideally before 11:00 AM or after 3:00 PM.
• The waterfall can be viewed from two locations: the top and the bottom.
• The path to the bottom is steep, which may pose challenges for those with heart conditions, breathing issues, or disabilities.
• Bathing is permitted in designated areas, so bring a change of clothes.
• Plastic and water bottles are allowed with a security deposit, which is forfeited if not returned.
• Food is not permitted inside the forest.
• Wheelchair access is available at the top of the falls, but rentals are not provided.
• Visiting the top takes at least 1 hour, and the bottom 1.5 hours. If visiting Athirapally along with Charpa and Vazhachal, allocate half a day.
• Restaurants and coffee shops are near the entrance.
-
Charpa Waterfall - Located 3 km beyond Athirapally Waterfalls on the way to Sholayar Dam, Charpa Waterfall is smaller but best viewed during the monsoon. It is on the left side of the road and does not require an entry ticket.
-
Vazhachal Waterfalls - Situated 5 km beyond Athirapally Waterfalls, this waterfall is unique as it cascades in several steps. Visitors can get close to the falls up to the fencing to observe the milky water. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy, with a park and coffee shop available. The entry ticket from Athirapally Waterfall is valid here, so keep it with you.
-
Cherai Beach - After completing the Athirapally sightseeing by 1:00 PM, lunch can be enjoyed at Athirapally or at a restaurant en route to Cherai Beach. Depart for Cherai Beach at 1:00 PM, either before or after lunch, with an expected arrival by 4:00 PM. Enjoy the beach until sunset.
Cherai Beach Activities: For those interested in beach activities at Cherai, here are the options:
- Adventure and fun rides: A water sports center in Cherai offers various activities, including banana rides, lay low rides, kneeboarding, single or double kayaking, bumper rides, and speedboat rides. Catamaran rides, windsurfing, water skiing, and scuba diving are also available but require prior training.
- Swimming: Allowed up to 50 meters in designated areas.
- Munambam: A popular fishing spot, but bring your own gear and bait.
- Cherai backwaters offer country boat or pedal boat rides.
Important Beach Tips:
• Swimming is not allowed after 6:30 PM.
• During peak season or busy times, activities should be booked in advance.
• The monsoon season in Kerala runs from early June to the end of August, making the beach unsuitable for swimming.
• Lifeguards and tourist police are available on the beach.
• No washroom or bathing facilities are available on the beach.
• The beach can be crowded with local tourists during holidays and weekends.
