- Dochula Pass - Drive up to Dochula Pass (3,088m/10,130ft) and pause to admire the view and the 108 chortens, mani wall, and prayer flags adorning the highest point on the road. On clear days, the high Himalayan peaks to the northeast are visible in all their splendor. Peaks visible from this pass include Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongaphugang (7,060m), and Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest peak at 7,497m.
- Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Enjoy a hike to Chimi Lhakhang through scenic rice fields and farmhouses. Built by Lama Nawang Chogyel in 1499 after being blessed by Drukpa Kunley, the divine madman, this monastery houses the original wooden phallus symbol brought from Tibet. It is a popular temple where women pray for fertility, known as the Fertility Temple.
- Punakha Dzong - Visit Punakha Dzong, a grand structure at the confluence of two rivers. Once Bhutan’s capital until 1955, it remains the winter residence of the central monk body. Bhutan’s first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, was crowned here in 1907. The fortress has withstood fires, earthquakes, and floods over the centuries, with the latest flood in October 1994 causing significant damage but sparing its most sacred statue.
- Punakha Suspension Bridge - The 160-meter Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge is the longest in Bhutan, offering spectacular views of Punakha Dzong and the Pho Chhu Valley.
- Phobjikha Valley - Explore Phobjikha Valley, home to the most beautiful and shortest nature trails in Bhutan. The hike begins at the Mani stone wall north of Gangtey Gonpa and ends at Khewa Lhakhang, taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes through pine forests and bamboo plants. The valley offers stunning views and is a favorite among nature lovers. In winter, the endangered Black Neck Cranes can be seen.
- Kyichu Lhakhang - Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, constructed in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.
- Paro Taktsang - One of Bhutan’s holiest and most beautiful sites, Taktshang, or the tiger’s lair, derives its name from the legend of its founding when Guru Rimpoche, revered as the second Buddha, arrived from Tibet on the back of a tigress in the 8th century.
- Paro Penlop Heritage Home Museum - This historical heritage farmhouse offers a glimpse into the authentic lifestyle of Bhutanese society. After a hike, enjoy a relaxing hot stone bath and an authentic Bhutanese farmhouse meal.
