In the 16th century, Basque fishermen and sailors embarked on lengthy voyages to Newfoundland in pursuit of whales and cod. Cider was the drink of choice for these sailors, with each consuming at least 3 liters daily! Much of the cider from Basque farmhouse cellars was provided for these expeditions. Visitors can witness the reconstruction of the 16th-century whaling ship San Juan, which sank in the chilly waters off Canada. The ship’s design traces back to its origins, and it is set to sail once more to the Canadian waters it explored centuries ago.
- Aburuza Jatetxe Sagardotegia - Visitors will meet the family who operates this establishment and learn about the process of making Basque cider. Afterward, they will sample the cider, first from the bottle and then as part of a traditional cider house menu. The journey will conclude with a return to San Sebastian, allowing further enjoyment of the region.

Entertaining tour & day out! - Really enjoyable day! The whaleship & museum was interesting & impressive. The cider house was fun, enjoyed relaxing & chatting with others in our group & our host. Telmo, our guide, was awesome! So friendly, knowledgeable and showed genuine interest, adding personal touches to the day based on what we had been discussing together. Great day out, recommend!

San Sebastián whale ship tour 2024 - Our guide spoke excellent English snd took her time with us.
The whale ship was fascinating, followed by tour of cider house and delicious lunch at the cider house. Highly recommend!
