Highlights

Cusco - Amazon Pona Lodge.

Paucartambo - The journey begins at 5:00 am, departing from Cusco in a private vehicle specially equipped for the mountainous and jungle terrain. Along the way, travelers will encounter numerous tourist attractions, including Ninamarca, a pre-Inca structure from the Lupaca culture. The route continues through the Paucartambo valley and the town of Paucartambo, celebrated as Peru’s folklore capital. The journey reaches the Ajanaco pass, marking the entrance to Manu National Park, where a registration stop is made. From here, the descent into the Amazon jungle begins, passing through a stunning cloud forest. Short walks in this area offer opportunities to observe exotic birds, notably Peru’s national bird, the cock of the rock, as well as toucans, tanagers, and mammals like monkeys and coatis. With some luck, travelers might spot sloths and spectacled bears, along with a diverse array of flowers and orchids. Arrival at the Lodge is in the afternoon. L.D.

Amazon Pona Lodge – EcoManu Lodge.

Manu National Park - The day starts early, departing the Lodge for Atalaya. Here, a canoe ride down the Madre de Dios River leads to the parrot clay lick on the riverbank, where macaws and parrots can be seen feeding. The journey continues to Machuwasi Lake, where exploration on balsa rafts may reveal sightings of capybaras, caimans, monkeys, and water birds native to Amazonian lakes. The return trip by boat leads to the Eco Manu Lodge near Atalaya. In the afternoon, further exploration of the jungle seeks out more monkeys, birds, and medicinal plants. Before dinner, a night excursion offers the chance to observe nocturnal wildlife such as spiders, tarantulas, frogs, snakes, caimans, night monkeys, and various insects. B.L.D.

EcoManu Lodge - Cusco

Pilcopata - After breakfast, the return journey begins with a canoe ride back to Atalaya, followed by a drive to the hummingbird garden to admire a variety of hummingbirds in different sizes and colors. The trip concludes with a private car ride back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5 pm. B.L.

Life-changing wildlife experience in Manu National Park - We went on a 6D/5N tour to Manu reserved zone with Alex. This was an awesome experience and we would 100% go with Green Amazon tours again and recommend them to others. It was very wildlife focused which was exactly what we wanted. If considering a trip to the Peruvian Amazon and are a wildlife enthusiast you must book a trip that goes into the RESERVED zone rather than just cultural zone. Although expensive, Green Amazon charges a rate comparable to other operators that go into the reserved zone and we thought it was good value for a once in a lifetime experience. Alex is incredibly knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna having grown up locally in the jungle. He has a knack for spotting and listening for animals, and was kind enough to help us get great photos using our phones with his high resolution telescope. He is friendly, respectful of others including wildlife, professional and speaks excellent English. He went out of his way to make sure we got the most out of the tour, including answering our many questions. We were lucky enough to see many giant otters, black caiman, cabybara, macaws, toucan, >30 other species of birds, many species of monkeys. We were not lucky enough to see jaguar, sloth or tapir. Heavy rain on our first night in the jungle and high river levels likely affected this (going during dry season would optimise your chances accordingly to Alex). Alex however did his very best to try optimise our chances including modifying / personalising parts of the tour for this. I understand many of his clients do see these animals with his expert knowledge and spotting ability. 6D/5N was a good amount of days to ensure we weren’t rushing into the reserve, and that we had adequate time while there. The long drive and boat trips did not seem arduous due to frequent stops for wildlife spotting and walks. It is a small locally owned company which is part of the reason we chose Green Amazon. There was just 2 of us on our tour, but the groups are limited to 6 maximum to ensure a more personal experience. We felt very safe and cared for during the trip. Accommodation was good (basic as one might expect in the jungle!) with mosquito nets and clean toilet facilities, and the food was great during the tour. We did not go hungry!
