- Swissair Flight 111 Memorial - Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was an international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, USA, to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. It was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On September 2, 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 operating this flight, registration HB-IWF, tragically crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax Stanfield International Airport near St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometers (5 miles; 4 nautical miles) from shore, approximately equidistant from the quaint fishing and tourist communities of Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater, resulting in the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. This incident marks the deadliest accident in Swissair’s history and the most severe involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. It is also the second-deadliest aviation accident in Canada, following Arrow Air Flight 1285R.
- Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay and capture a photo of the renowned three churches, and perhaps explore a few local attractions. Continue to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, many new immigrants were relocated from Halifax to Lunenburg, intended to be the center of a planned settlement. The first arrivals settled in the town of Lunenburg and had farm lots throughout the peninsula, including Mahone Bay, under the leadership of mariner Ephraim Cook. The settlers on the Lunenburg Peninsula, including present-day Mahone Bay, were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. The village gained popularity for shipbuilding in the 18th century. Mahone Bay’s boat-building history began with the Mi’kmaq, who crafted birch bark canoes. The British initiated the first industrial ship production, establishing sawmills to supply lumber for shipbuilding.
- Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is celebrated as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic District. It is one of North America’s best-preserved colonial settlements. Founded in 1753 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Lunenburg offers much to visitors. Historically, its economy was based on offshore fishing, and today it houses Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant. The town flourished in the late 1800s, with many architectural treasures from that period. This vibrant fishing village has been thriving since its inception. Its beautiful architecture and active waterfront reflect its rich history. Visitors can explore the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg Academy, board the famous Bluenose schooner, or stroll through the colorful streets, soaking in the charm of this UNESCO heritage village. In the 1800s, Lunenburg thrived through shipping, trade, and fishing.
