The crash site was 8 kilometers (5 miles; 4 nautical miles) from shore, equidistant from the fishing and tourist communities of Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater, resulting in the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. This was the deadliest accident in Swissair’s history and the most severe involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, as well as the second-deadliest aviation accident in Canada, following Arrow Air Flight 1285R.

Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay to capture a photo of the renowned three churches and explore a few local stops. Continue to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, many new immigrants were brought from Halifax to Lunenburg, intended as the center of a planned settlement. The first arrivals lived in the town of Lunenburg and had farm lots throughout the peninsula, including Mahone Bay, under the leadership of mariner Ephraim Cook. The settlers on the Lunenburg Peninsula, including Mahone Bay, were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. The village was known for shipbuilding in the 18th century. Mahone Bay’s boat-building history began with the Mi’kmaq, who crafted birch bark canoes. The British initiated industrial ship production, establishing sawmills for lumber.
