Arrival in Puerto Maldonado (Capital of Biodiversity of Peru)
Tambopata National Reserve - Upon arrival at the airport or land terminal, guests will be greeted and transferred to the Monte Amazónico Lodge office for registration. From there, a transfer to the captaincy port will be arranged, where a one-hour boat ride will take guests to the lodge. A warm welcome awaits with a refreshing fruit-based juice from the region, followed by room assignments.
After a relaxing break, guests will embark on a two-hour guided walk through the lush tropical forest. An expert local guide will lead the way along trails, showcasing a variety of trees, some over five hundred years old, and the chance to spot wildlife such as toucans, orioles, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This experience offers a glimpse into the enchanting Amazon rainforest within the TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE, which spans 278,000 hectares of protected land.
Following lunch, a visit to “Monkey Island” is planned. Located across the Madre de Dios River from the lodge, the island is home to various species, including Capuchin monkeys. Afterward, guests will return to the lodge. In the evening, a search for white alligators on the sandbanks of the Madre de Dios River will take place, requiring a flashlight. Additionally, there may be sightings of the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, weighing up to 60 kilos. The day concludes with dinner and rest at the lodge.
Sandoval Lake
Lago Sandoval - After breakfast, a 3 km walk through the dense rainforest leads to Sandoval Lake, a habitat for piranhas and one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. Guests will enjoy a rowing boat ride, observing a wide variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorant, jacanas, puma heron, chickens, cotomono, monk friar, black machin, pichicos, and sloths. There may also be a chance to encounter the endangered giant otter family, nearly two meters long, and the largest recorded alligators over 4 meters long. After returning to the lodge, a typical lunch will be served.
In the evening, a walk will reveal the diverse species of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Dinner and rest will follow.
Adventure Sports
Tambopata - At 5:30 a.m., a short walk along the Canopy Walk-Way, approximately 30 meters high, offers a unique perspective of nature and a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, various bird species, such as toucans, macaws, tangaras, and orioles, can be observed, making for a memorable experience.
After breakfast, guests will prepare for a treetop challenge over 30 meters high. An instructor guide will provide a briefing on using the safety harness for the Zip-line, allowing guests to feel the thrill of gliding through the trees. After returning to the lodge, lunch and rest are scheduled.
