Quitaraju is located to the southeast of Alpamayo. While Quitaraju doesn’t receive as much attention as Alpamayo, with more climbers opting for Alpamayo, fewer groups choose to climb Nevado Quitaraju. It is a beautiful mountain offering stunning views of its south face, as well as Alpamayo, Artesonraju, Huascarán, and Chopicalqui. The easiest route is the West Ridge, graded AD, which is very long, sustained, and steep in certain sections. The North Face is also impressive, graded D, with a 700m climb and an inclination of about 55 degrees. Various routes offer different challenges, so more experienced climbers can find 60-70 degree climbs by moving 50m left or right from the arete in the upper part of the face.
Quitaraju, also known as Kitarahu (from Ancash Quechua: kita meaning dam, and rahu meaning snow, ice, or mountain with snow), with Hispanicized spellings Quitarajo, Quitaraju, and Kitaraju, is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru, standing approximately 6,040 meters (19,816 feet) high. It is located in the Ancash region.
