Legend has it that the Inca felt endangered after the eruption of the nearby Kinsacha Volcano. This led them to construct a temple in honor of Wiracocha, the creator of heaven and earth. Spanning hundreds of hectares, the temple was erected in the 15th Century, around the same time the Inca expanded their territory into Ecuador. The structure was nearly entirely demolished by Spanish colonists in the 16th Century.
