The Marão Tunnel features two galleries, each 5,825 meters long, making it the longest road tunnel in Portugal and the third longest in the Iberian Peninsula. It was constructed to replace the original IP4 section, which traversed the Serra do Marão slopes with a 2+1 lane highway profile. The Marão Tunnel is tolled, but the original IP4 route (operational since 1988) remains an alternative to the tunnel.
