The Marão Tunnel features two galleries, each 5,825 meters long, making it the longest road tunnel in Portugal and the third longest in the Iberian Peninsula. It was constructed to replace the original section of the IP4, which traversed the slopes of Serra do Marão with a 2+1 lane highway profile. The Marão Tunnel is tolled, but the original IP4 route (in service since 1988) remains as an alternative to the tunnel.
