Spice Up Your Travels: A Thai Cooking Adventure in Phang-nga

In search of authentic Thai cuisine, I embarked on a culinary adventure in Phang-nga. The Thai Cooking Class with Chef Wandee promised a hands-on experience, and it delivered beyond expectations.

A Market Adventure

Arriving in Phang-nga, I was eager to dive into the local culture and cuisine. The Thai Cooking Class was the perfect opportunity to do just that. The day began with a taxi ride to a bustling local market, where we were split into small groups. Our guide, a friendly and knowledgeable local, led us through the vibrant stalls, sharing fascinating insights about the ingredients we would later use in our cooking class. The market was a sensory overload, with the aroma of fresh herbs and spices mingling with the chatter of vendors and shoppers. We even had a chance to explore on our own, picking up a few exotic fruits to try later.

Cooking in Paradise

After our market adventure, we headed to the cooking school nestled in the lush gardens of Khao Lak. The setting was idyllic, with an open-air kitchen surrounded by tropical greenery. Each of us had our own cooking station, complete with all the necessary tools and ingredients. We were asked in advance which dishes we wanted to cook, and I was thrilled to be assigned to the group making vegetable spring rolls and papaya salad. Under the expert guidance of Chef Wandee, we learned to prepare these dishes from scratch, using traditional Thai techniques. The process was both educational and fun, and I was amazed at how delicious our creations turned out.

A Feast to Remember

The highlight of the day was preparing Pad Thai and mango sticky rice, two iconic Thai dishes. We had the option to choose our protein for the Pad Thai, and I opted for shrimp, which paired perfectly with the tangy sauce and fresh vegetables. The mango sticky rice was a revelation, with the sweet, creamy rice complementing the juicy mango slices. Throughout the class, we were provided with complimentary soft drinks, which was a nice touch. At the end of the session, we sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labor, sharing stories and laughter with our fellow participants. It was a truly memorable experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for Thai cuisine and a link to the recipes so I could recreate the dishes at home.
