- Phnom Penh - Begin the day with a visit to the Royal Palace, where you can delve into a more prosperous era of Cambodian history. Discover the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, then explore Wat Phnom, a serene temple on a hill that gave the city its name. Legend has it that in the 14th century, a woman named Penh found sacred Buddhist relics in a nearby river and placed them on this hill.
Lunch is not included.
In the afternoon, head to the infamous Killing Fields “Choeung Ek,” located 15km southwest of Phnom Penh. This site witnessed the tragic executions of over 17,000 people, many of whom endured interrogations, torture, and deprivation at Toul Sleng Prison during the Pol Pot regime (1975–1979). Continue to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21 prison), which was once a high school repurposed as a prison by Pol Pot’s security forces, becoming the largest center for detention and torture under the Khmer Rouge. Afterwards, enjoy shopping at a local market at your leisure.
-
Royal Palace - The Royal Palace features several magnificent buildings, including the Throne Hall, located to the left of the main entrance. It is distinguished by a 59-meter tower with a beautifully tiered roof adorned with golden tiles. This hall is used for official celebrations, coronations, and meetings with foreign dignitaries and government officials. The Royal Treasury and the Napoleon II villa are situated south of the Royal Throne Hall.
-
Silver Pagoda - Wat Preah Keo Morakot, also known as the Silver Pagoda, is situated in the southern part of the Royal Palace complex. Formerly called Wat Uborsoth Rotannaram, it is where the King worshiped, prayed, and observed Buddhist Silas Day.
-
Wat Phnom - Perched atop a 27-meter-high tree-covered knoll, Wat Phnom is the city’s only hill. According to legend, the first pagoda was built here in 1373 to house four Buddha statues deposited by the Mekong River and discovered by a woman named Penh.
-
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Between 1975 and 1978, approximately 17,000 men, women, children, and infants (including nine Westerners) detained and tortured at S-21 prison (now Tuol Sleng Museum) were transported to this site for execution to conserve bullets. The remains of 8,985 people, many bound and blindfolded, were exhumed in 1980 from mass graves in what was once an orchard; 43 of the 129 communal graves remain untouched. Fragments of human bones and bits of cloth are scattered around the disinterred pits. Over 8,000 skulls, sorted by gender, are displayed behind clear glass panels in the Memorial Stupa, erected in 1988. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are located 15 km from central Phnom Penh.
-
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - In 1975, Tuol Svay Prey High School was converted by Pol Pot’s security forces into Security Prison 21 (S-21), becoming the largest detention and torture center in the country. Over 17,000 detainees from S-21 were sent to Choeung Ek for execution; those who died during torture were buried in mass graves on the prison grounds. S-21 has been transformed into the Tuol Sleng Museum, serving as a memorial to the Khmer Rouge’s atrocities.
