- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - This site, once an orchard, became a mass grave for victims of the Khmer Rouge, who were killed between 1975 and 1979. Located in Dangkao Section, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, it is approximately 17 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city center. It is the most renowned of the Killing Fields, where the Khmer Rouge regime executed over a million people during that period. After the regime’s fall, mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were uncovered at Choeung Ek. Many of the deceased were former political prisoners held by the Khmer Rouge at the Tuol Sleng detention center and other facilities in Cambodia. Today, Choeung Ek serves as a memorial, featuring a Buddhist stupa with acrylic glass sides, housing over 9,000 human skulls. Some lower levels are open during the day for direct viewing of the skulls, many of which are shattered or damaged. The Cambodian government encourages tourists to visit Choeung Ek.
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, or simply Tuol Sleng, documents the Cambodian genocide. Situated in Phnom Penh, this site was formerly a secondary school, repurposed as Security Prison 21 by the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 until its collapse in 1979. To manage the victims of significant purges, the Khmer Rouge converted the building, previously known as Tuol Svay Pray High School, named after a royal ancestor of King Norodom Sihanouk, into a prison and interrogation center in March or April 1976. The complex consists of five buildings.
