- Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan - Constructed in 1324, Wat Phanan Choeng predates the founding of the Ayutthaya Kingdom by about 26 years. As one of Ayutthaya’s oldest temples, it has played a pivotal role in Thai religious history.
The temple is famous for its large seated Buddha image, Luang Pho Tho, which stands approximately 19 meters tall. This statue is revered by both Thai and Chinese devotees, and is known as “Sam Pao Kong” among the Chinese.
Legend links the temple to a Chinese princess named Soi Dok Mak, who tragically died before her marriage to a Siamese king. The temple was subsequently built on a site associated with her story.
Unlike many other temples in Ayutthaya, Wat Phanan Choeng was spared during the Burmese invasion in 1767. As a result, it remains well-preserved and continues to be an active temple, attracting visitors and worshippers alike.
- Wat Mahathat - Built in the late 14th century, Wat Mahathat is renowned for once housing the great holy relics of Lord Buddha in its central prang tower. It is also famous for the sandstone Buddha head entwined in tree roots, a highlight of Ayutthaya province.
- Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the most significant royal temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Constructed in the 15th century within the Royal Palace grounds, it was exclusively used for royal ceremonies and did not house resident monks.
The temple is most recognized for its three large chedis (stupas), built to enshrine the ashes of Ayutthaya kings, including King Borommatrailokanat and his successors. These chedis became emblematic of the temple and the kingdom’s power.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet suffered extensive damage during the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya in 1767, when the city was devastated. Despite being in ruins, the remains of the three chedis still stand, making it one of Ayutthaya’s most renowned historical sites today.
