• Arataki Visitor Centre - Waitakere Ranges - At the Arataki Visitor Centre, visitors enter the gateway to the Waitākere Ranges, surrounded by breathtaking views of native forests, reservoirs, and the Tasman coastline. During the 30-minute visit, there is ample time to step onto the viewing decks, capture photos from the iconic carved frame overlooking the ranges, and soak in the tranquility and spaciousness of the landscape.

Inside the centre, guests can explore exhibits that highlight the geology, ecology, and cultural importance of the area, featuring artworks and stories linked to mana whenua. It serves as a gentle introduction to the region, aiding visitors in understanding the environment they will be exploring throughout the tour.

The centre also offers clean restroom facilities, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stop before continuing towards the coastline and Piha.

• Piha Beach - At Piha Beach, visitors have up to an hour to discover a coastline that feels vastly different from central Auckland. The guide will lead guests onto the black-sand beach, explaining its unique characteristics — how the color originates from the volcanic rock of the Waitākere Ranges and why it can feel warm underfoot even on cooler days. There is time to stroll along the shoreline, experience the sand’s texture, and admire the expansive views of the west coast.

The guide will also highlight the surrounding cliffs and Lion Rock, explaining their formation and why Piha exudes such a strong, rugged charm. There is plenty of time to take photos, approach Lion Rock, and enjoy the open space and refreshing sea air. This stop provides an opportunity to slow down, explore at leisure, and truly appreciate what makes Piha special — its black sand, wild surf, and the dramatic landscape that envelops it.
