Pillcopata - Early in the morning, the journey from Cusco will begin in a private bus. The route will pass through the stunning Andean valleys and charming rural communities. Stops will include fascinating sites like the Chullpas of Ninamarca, a pre-Inca cemetery, and Paucartambo, a traditional colonial town, where a museum visit will offer insights into the local culture. Lunch will be enjoyed en route in the cloud forest. The descent will continue through the cloud forest, home to unique species such as the spectacled bear and the cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird. Along the way, diverse plant species like orchids, bromeliads, and ferns will be visible. In the afternoon, arrival in Pilcopata is expected, where the night will be spent at the lodge.
Pilcopata – Aguas Calientes – Boca Manu (300 m.a.s.l.)
Manu National Park - After an early breakfast, a hike in the forest will offer opportunities to observe wildlife, including monkeys and birds. The itinerary includes a visit to a coca plantation and an animal rescue center. The journey will continue by bus to Port Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 m.a.s.l. A boat descent will follow, showcasing a vast array of bird species such as herons, vultures, and cormorants. A stop at hot springs will provide relaxation amidst the beautiful jungle. Lunch will be served before continuing to Boca Manu, where the night will be spent at the lodge.
Boca Manu – Reserved Zone / Casa Machiguenga (395 m.a.s.l.):
Manu National Park - An early departure will lead to the parrot lick, just ten minutes downriver from the lodge. A brief stop at the Limonal security checkpoint will precede the journey into the heart of the Reserved Zone, lasting about 4 hours, culminating at Casa Machiguenga for a two-night stay. This trip will offer sightings of numerous bird species, including macaws, vultures, eagles, toucans, and herons, as well as other wildlife like capybaras, caimans, river turtles, monkeys, and possibly a jaguar basking on the beach or feeding in the trees. The afternoon will be dedicated to a forest walk to explore wildlife in this untouched jungle. The night will be spent in the rustic Casa Matsiguenka with shared facilities.
Reserved Zone / Cocha Salvador (395 m.a.s.l.)
Manu - The morning will likely begin with the call of the howler monkey. After breakfast, a hike will be taken in the cooler morning temperatures, offering a chance to see animals foraging. Exploration of the impressive Lake Salvador will focus on finding giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), an endangered species. Other wildlife to look for includes black caimans, various monkey species (13 in total), the prehistoric bird Hoatzin, King Fishers, and many more. After returning for lunch, a 3-hour afternoon hike will provide further opportunities to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna. A night walk option is available to search for frogs, snakes, and insects.
Reserved Zone / Lake Otorongo (395 m.a.s.l.) – Boca Manu
Manu National Park - Another early start will include breakfast and walks around the lodge and Lake Otorongo. An observation tower 15 meters from the lake will offer views of the surrounding primary forest and better chances to see the resident otter family. Birdwatching in the forest canopy will likely reveal surprising species, such as giant Ceiba trees, colorful butterflies, and various monkeys. The journey will continue downstream by boat, with opportunities to spot caimans, turtles, and birds. Upon arrival at Limonal, a walk to a platform will provide excellent views of flora and fauna. The day will conclude with travel to Boca Manu for an overnight stay.
Spend the night in a lodge
Manu National Park - The day will involve boarding a boat on the Alto Madre de Dios River, traveling against the current while enjoying the stunning Amazon Jungle landscape and diverse bird species. A stop at the hot springs is optional, and the afternoon will see arrival at Amazon Manu Lodge. Comfortable rooms will offer rest for the night, surrounded by the enchanting sounds of the jungle. A night walk is optional.
Amazon Manu Lodge – Cusco
Manu National Park - An early morning start will continue the return journey to Port Atalaya. A car will be waiting to transport travelers back to Cusco, with an evening arrival expected.
