A Journey Through the Douro Valley

As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are both enriching and enjoyable for the whole family. The Douro Valley Tour, with its promise of heritage, wine, and stunning scenery, seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore a new part of Portugal with my children. Our adventure began on a crisp winter morning, with the sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. The spread included cold cheeses, meats, olives, and bread, followed by a delicious cod and vegetable pastry, roasted pork shank, and chicken. The meal was a culinary journey through the flavors of Portugal, and the kids were thrilled to try new dishes. The accompanying wines were a treat for the adults, perfectly complementing the meal.

Cruising the Douro River

After a satisfying lunch, we continued our journey to Pinhão, a town known for its breathtaking views and historic train station adorned with traditional tiles. The short drive was punctuated by stops to capture the stunning landscape, a photographer’s dream.

In Pinhão, we embarked on a traditional Portuguese boat for a leisurely cruise along the Douro River. The gentle sway of the boat and the serene beauty of the river made for a relaxing experience. The kids were fascinated by the boat ride, and the complimentary glass of port was a delightful touch for the adults. As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the river, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this magical day.

Our journey back to Porto was along one of the most scenic roads I’ve ever traveled, winding alongside the banks of the Douro River. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Sofia’s expertise and passion for the region made the experience truly special, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the Douro Valley.
