From 1963 to 1978, it housed four medium-range ballistic missiles SS-4, each equipped with 2-megaton thermonuclear warheads. These missiles, along with nearby terrestrial platforms for similar missile launches, formed a Soviet nuclear armament group in Lithuania capable of devastating all of Europe.
• Kryziu Kalnas - The Hill of Crosses (Lithuanian: Kryžių kalnas) is a pilgrimage site located about 12 km north of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. The exact origin of placing crosses on the hill is unclear, but it is believed to have started after the 1831 Uprising on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort. Over time, not only crosses and crucifixes but also statues of the Virgin Mary, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, and thousands of small effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The number of crosses is unknown, but estimates suggest about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006. It is a significant Catholic pilgrimage site in Lithuania.
