Polonnaruwa - A UNESCO World Heritage site, Polonnaruwa is steeped in history. In the 12th century, a prince of remarkable strength and determination from Rohana (Southern Sri Lanka) ascended to the throne as King Prakrama Bahu the Great. He established Polonnaruwa as a capital befitting his authority and ambition. Known as a successful warrior and an exceptional administrator, he constructed a nine-mile-long dam, creating the “Sea of Parakrama” to collect rainwater for use during dry seasons, showcasing Sri Lanka’s advanced irrigation techniques. This was a time when much of Europe was still in darkness. Many projects from this prosperous era aimed at food storage still function today. The impressive ruins in Polonnaruwa stand as a testament to his power and glory.

Minneriya National Park - Located 182 km from Colombo in Sri Lanka’s North Central Plains, Minneriya National Park is closest to the city of Polonnaruwa. The best time to visit is from May to October, during the famous Gathering of wild elephant herds. This event is the largest known congregation of Asian elephants globally. In the dry season from August to September, up to 300 elephants gather near the expansive Minneriya Reservoir. This Elephant Gathering is an unforgettable spectacle for those lucky enough to witness it. The park is home to 24 species of mammals, over 170 bird species, and 25 reptile species, 8 of which are endemic.
