Cycling and Hiking Through Cambodia’s Hidden Gems: A 2-Day Adventure
Seeking an authentic Cambodian adventure, I embarked on a 2-day cycling and hiking tour through Kirirom National Park. From cycling through vibrant villages to hiking lush trails, this journey offered a true taste of Cambodia’s natural beauty and warm hospitality.
Pedaling Through Cambodia’s Countryside
The adventure began with a pick-up from my hotel in Phnom Penh, where I met our guide, Pis. As we left the bustling city behind, the landscape transformed into serene countryside. Our group was equipped with brand new mountain bikes, and we set off on a 45km cycling journey through picturesque villages, fields, and plantations. The vibrant water lilies on the lakes added a splash of color to the scenery, and the friendly locals greeted us with smiles and waves. Pis was an attentive guide, sharing insights about the area and ensuring we stayed hydrated with the water provided. The minibus was always nearby, ready to pick us up if we needed a break, but the ride was so invigorating that I found myself pushing through.
As the sun began to set, we arrived at Chambok Eco Village, a community-based tourism project. The golden light over the rice fields was a sight to behold, and it set the perfect backdrop for our evening. We gathered at the community center for a meal prepared by the locals, a delicious spread that introduced us to authentic Khmer flavors. The warmth of the community was palpable, and it was a wonderful way to end the first day of our adventure.
A Night in Chambok
Our accommodation for the night was a homestay within the Chambok community. The room was simple yet comfortable, and the hospitality of the family hosting us made it feel like home. That evening, we had the opportunity to learn how to make pop rice with banana, a local delicacy. It was a fun and interactive experience, and the laughter and stories shared with the family made it a memorable night.
The next morning, we rose early to the sounds of the village waking up. After a hearty breakfast, we set off on a hike through the jungle and forest towards Kirirom Mountain. The trail was lush and green, and the air was filled with the sounds of nature. Along the way, we explored a bat cave and marveled at a beautiful waterfall. Pis, our guide, was knowledgeable and kept us engaged with stories about the local wildlife and plants.
Conquering Kirirom Mountain
The highlight of the hike was reaching the summit of Kirirom Mountain, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the Cardamom mountain range. The panorama was stunning, and it was a moment of pure tranquility. We enjoyed a picnic lunch amidst the pine trees, soaking in the natural beauty around us.
On our descent, we encountered a giant snake on the trail. It was a thrilling moment, but Pis handled the situation with calm and expertise, ensuring our safety. The encounter added an unexpected twist to our adventure, and it was a reminder of the wild beauty of Cambodia.
As we made our way back to Phnom Penh, I reflected on the past two days. The Kirirom Adventure was more than just a tour; it was an immersive experience that offered a glimpse into the heart of Cambodia. From cycling through the countryside to hiking in the jungle, every moment was filled with discovery and connection. For anyone seeking an authentic and adventurous journey, this is an experience not to be missed.
