- Port Adelaide - The region now recognized as Port Adelaide was originally inhabited by the Kaurna people, who also lived across the Adelaide Plains, the Barossa Valley, the western side of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and northwards beyond Snowtown. The Kaurna people referred to the Port Adelaide area as Yartapuulti, and the estuarine region as Yertabulti, meaning ‘land of sleep or death’.
Port Adelaide was established by European settlers on January 6th, 1837, initially known as Port Creek Settlement. Shipping operations commenced a month after its establishment, although it was initially unsuitable for large vessels, which had to dock at Holdfast Bay until the port was officially chartered.
- Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary - The Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary is a highlight of metropolitan Adelaide. Situated just 20 minutes from Adelaide, this marine park is home to approximately 30 resident bottlenose dolphins, with an additional 400 transient dolphins visiting at various times. These wild dolphins come here to feed, play, socialize, and nurse their young.
Within the Sanctuary, there is a 10,000-year-old mangrove forest, along with seagrass, saltmarsh, tidal flats, and tidal creeks, all providing habitat and nourishment for the dolphins. The Sanctuary is part of South Australia’s largest port and features several Aboriginal and European cultural and historical sites of interest.
The area is also a popular bird-watching location and shares much of its northern coastal habitat with the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.
