• Batu Caves - Batu Caves is a renowned and popular tourist destination in Selangor. Home to a Hindu temple and shrine, Batu Caves draws thousands of worshippers and tourists. This limestone formation, located just north of Kuala Lumpur, features three main caves with temples and Hindu shrines. Its main highlight is the large statue of a Hindu deity at the entrance, along with a steep 272-step climb to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city skyline. Monkeys play around the caves, and it is a favored spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. The site also showcases paintings and scenes of Hindu gods.
• Petronas Twin Towers - Standing at 451.9 meters, the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers is a globally recognized symbol of modern Malaysia. It is the centerpiece of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) development, which includes landmarks such as the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Suria KLCC shopping mall, star-rated hotels, a mosque, and the beautifully landscaped KLCC Park. Visitors can explore the Skybridge on the 41st floor and the viewing deck on the 86th floor.
• Menara Kuala Lumpur - Rising majestically atop Bukit Nanas at 421 meters and 94 meters above sea level, KL Tower is a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. Its architecture reflects the country’s Islamic heritage, with construction detailing Arabic scripts, Islamic tiles, classic Islamic floral and abstract motifs, and soothing color combinations.
• East Coast Batik Sdn Bhd (Batik CHONG) - East Coast Batik (914804-X) (formerly Syarikat East Coast), established in 1974, is one of the oldest batik and handicrafts centers in Klang Valley. A visit to the gallery reveals that batik is not merely a cloth with an elaborate design. Syarikat East Coast is the place to visit for a comprehensive experience in Malaysian batik and handicrafts.
• Royal Selangor Visitor Centre - The Visitor Centre takes you back over a hundred years to the founding of Royal Selangor and its deep connection to Malaysia’s history. Through complimentary guided tours, visitors learn about the remarkable development of tin mining in the Malay Peninsula in the 1800s and view traditional pewtersmithing tools, antique pewter, and ancient tin currency at the centre’s pewter museum.
• Istana Negara - Istana Negara, or the National Palace, is the official residence of the King of Malaysia. This majestic building, located at Jalan Duta, officially became the National Palace in November 2011, replacing the old palace at Jalan Istana. It features 22 domes, with the largest dome reaching a height of 40 meters. Note: Visits are limited to the exterior.
• National Monument - The National Monument was built to honor those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom, particularly during the nation’s struggle against communism. Within the National Monument grounds is one of the world’s largest free-standing bronze sculptures. It was sculpted in 1966 by Felix de Weldon, who also created the famous Iwo Jima Monument in Washington DC.
• Merdeka Square - Merdeka Square is located directly opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and beside the Royal Selangor Club. This historic site is where the Union Flag was lowered, and the Malayan Flag was raised for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the venue for the annual Merdeka Parade.
• Sultan Abdul Samad Building - The iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building is situated in front of Dataran Merdeka. This historical building houses the Supreme and High Courts. The building, with its unique Moorish designs and clock tower, is widely photographed by visitors to the city center.
• National Mosque (Masjid Negara) - Masjid Negara is one of the most distinguished landmarks in the city. It features a unique star-shaped dome and a 73-meter high minaret. The National Mosque is located on the edge of the KL Lake Gardens. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately when visiting the mosque, and women are required to wear headscarves.
• Malayan Railway Administration Building - One of Malaysia’s most beautiful old buildings, the Railway Station and Administration Building is a stunning example of Moorish architecture.
• Little India Brickfields - Brickfields began as the center of brick-making in the late 19th century, following a massive fire and flood that swept through Kuala Lumpur in 1881. These disasters destroyed the town’s wooden and thatched structures. Sir Frank Swettenham, the British Resident at the time, responded by mandating the use of brick and tile in building construction, thus defining the town’s purpose.
• Thean Hou Temple - Thean Hou Temple, built between 1981 and 1987, is a modern structure beneath its traditional ornate decorative facade. The temple is large, spreading over six tiers, and is managed by Malaysia’s Hainanese community, descendants of sea-faring fisherfolk from Hainan Island, China.
• Sri Maha Mariamman Temple - This stunning Hindu temple is one of the oldest, featuring a magnificent 22-meter-high gate tower and portico adorned with intricately carved images of Hindu deities. Inside are the deities of the Hindu goddess Maha Mariamman, embellished with gold and precious stones. Visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of peddlers selling jasmine garlands and aromatic incense filling the air.
• National Museum - Muzium Negara was formerly the site of the Selangor Museum, established in 1898. After the country’s independence in 1957, the new federal government built a larger museum on the same site. The museum houses various exhibits depicting the country’s historical background. The exhibits rotate, so it is best to call ahead to check the current displays.
