- Casco Bay - Featuring over 200 islands, Casco Bay is a lively and picturesque area that hosts both small coastal fishing communities and Maine’s largest city. It offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy Maine’s stunning beauty, exceptional cuisine, and excellent boating experiences.
- Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse - Visit Spring Point Light and the nearby Fort Preble, a small gun emplacement that was part of Portland’s Harbor Defenses. Initially, the lighthouse was not connected to the mainland by the granite breakwater present today, leading ships that navigated incorrectly to run aground on the shallow ledge.
- Bug Light Park - This is the smallest and first of four lighthouses encountered on the cruise through Casco Bay. On windy days, look out for gatherings of skilled kite flyers and their vibrant kites. Occasionally, a giant purple octopus can be seen floating leisurely in the breeze!
Just around the corner from Bug Light is a statue of the bow of a Liberty Ship. Many ships were built here during WWII, including the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien, a popular tourist attraction in San Francisco and one of the few surviving Liberty Ships.
- Portland Head Light - View Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest and most iconic lighthouse, from the water. Commissioned by George Washington and constructed beginning in 1791, this lighthouse has served as a crucial navigational beacon and local landmark for over two centuries.
The lighthouse has endured hurricanes and global conflicts. German U-boats sank a US Navy ship just 15 miles off the Head Light in the final days of WWII.
- Fort Gorges - As the most prominent stone fortress protecting Portland Harbor, Fort Gorges is a landmark visible from much of Casco Bay, which is precisely why it was built on this rocky outcropping near Peaks and Little Diamond Islands and the mainland. The fort could fire more than a dozen cannons on attackers from any sea route, but it was never used in active battle. Technological advancements in artillery during the Civil War made it too vulnerable to be effective. The fort served as a storage facility for the army during World War II, when underwater mines, electromagnetic sensing cables, and other systems were used to help protect Portland and Casco Bay from German attacks.
Portland was home to a large shipyard during WWII and was the start of a pipeline supplying oil to Montreal and eastern Canada, making the region strategically important even in more modern conflicts.
- Peaks Island - Enjoy breathtaking views of the scenic cliffs on Cushing Island and the tree-lined streets and charming cottages of Peaks Island.
Once home to several amusement parks served by direct steamer routes from New York, Peaks is now a tranquil island neighborhood that is technically part of the City of Portland but retains a unique small-town charm.
By the time the fall colors are in full display, most seasonal residents have returned to their usual homes, leaving Peaks with just a few hundred year-round residents who must take a ferry or water taxi to reach the mainland.
