Exploring Portugal’s Hidden Gems: A Family Adventure in Óbidos, Nazaré & Alcobaça
Join me as I embark on a family-friendly adventure through the enchanting towns of Óbidos, Nazaré, and Alcobaça. Discover the magic of medieval castles, coastal beauty, and rich history, all while creating unforgettable memories with the kids.
Discovering the Charms of Óbidos
Our journey began with a scenic drive from Lisbon to the enchanting medieval town of Óbidos. As we approached, the sight of the castle perched atop a rocky hill was like stepping into a fairy tale. The kids were immediately captivated by the idea of exploring a real castle, and I was thrilled to see their imaginations come alive.
Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets, we were surrounded by whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers. The town’s charm was undeniable, and it was easy to see why it has been a favorite among Portuguese queens. We took our time exploring the medieval walls, which offered stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The kids loved pretending to be knights defending the fortress, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with my camera.
Of course, no visit to Óbidos would be complete without tasting the famous Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups. While the kids enjoyed some local pastries, I savored the sweet treat, feeling like a true local. It was a delightful start to our adventure, and I couldn’t wait to see what Nazaré had in store for us.
Embracing the Coastal Beauty of Nazaré
Our next stop was the picturesque coastal village of Nazaré, known for its stunning beaches and giant waves. As we arrived, the Atlantic breeze greeted us, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was both exhilarating and calming.
We strolled along the golden sandy beach, where the kids were fascinated by the local women, known as Varinas, dressed in their traditional seven skirts. Their colorful attire and lively personalities added a unique charm to the experience. We learned about the village’s fishing traditions and even spotted some brave surfers attempting to conquer the legendary waves.
One of the highlights of our visit was the Suberco viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding cliffs. The kids were in awe of the vastness of the sea, and I found myself lost in the beauty of the moment. It was a perfect place to pause and appreciate the natural wonders of Portugal.
Unveiling the History of Alcobaça
Our final destination was the historic town of Alcobaça, home to the impressive Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we entered the monastery, the kids were intrigued by the tales of kings and queens, and I was eager to learn more about the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês.
The monastery’s gothic architecture was awe-inspiring, and the intricate details of the carved stone tombs left us speechless. It was a wonderful opportunity to teach the kids about Portugal’s rich history and the importance of preserving such cultural treasures.
Before leaving Alcobaça, we indulged in some traditional pastries, including the award-winning “cornucópias.” The sweet treats were a hit with the kids, and it was a delicious way to end our day of exploration.
As we made our way back to Lisbon, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared. The Óbidos, Nazaré & Alcobaça Tour had provided us with a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable family adventure. I highly recommend it to any family looking to explore the wonders of Portugal together.
