- Monsanto - It’s time for lunch. Although not included in the tour, time is set aside for lunch, either at a local restaurant or picnic-style in a nearby outdoor spot. Once your tour is booked, we’ll assist with these arrangements.
- Castelo de Almourol - On the return to Lisbon, after lunch and with plenty to discuss, enjoy an extra treat. A quick detour to the riverside offers relaxation, perhaps a drink, and a view of the 850-year-old Castle of Almourol. This well-preserved castle, from the early Templar period, is located on a rocky islet in the Tagus, Portugal’s longest and most famous river. Note: This tour does not include entry to Almourol Castle. This stop is for admiring the castle from the shore and learning about its history.

This iconic and fictional setting in the Targaryen saga was filmed at the Mountain and Castle of Monsanto in Portugal, a fortress-village dating back to the era of the first Knights Templar. Monsanto is prominently featured as Dragonstone in several episodes, particularly showcasing its most stunning scenes in the thrilling tenth and final episode of House of the Dragon. The location needed to be extraordinary, otherworldly, and full of mystique to serve as the epic finale. As the HBO series’ director remarked, “when we saw Monsanto, on a mountain, our jaws dropped and we felt we had found Dragonstone,” the home of House Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Be amazed and immerse yourself in the scenic fantasy world of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, while also learning about local landmarks.
