A wonderful trip - The hike was excellent, as a first time solo traveler I was a little nervous but everything was easy and I felt at ease with our lovely guide Maria. She provided insight into the history of the levadas, local wildlife, and was more than happy to answer questions. We had time to explore areas on our own and it was nice to get chatting to some of the others in the group. Overall it was a wonderful day and I would highly recommend to other solo travelers or people looking to explore Madeira for the first time.

Waterfalls in abundance, impressive levadas - Despite some rain we had a wonderful day with excellent & knowledgeable guide Maria from whom we learned so much about the history of the levadas, & about Madeira’s plants & birds. Definitely a good idea to bring waterproofs, & a walking pole was helpful on some of the downward steps.

Very well organised walk - Very well organised day with a very safe driver Antonio . Maria was charming and knew her stuff inside out , it was a nice group of 9 to be with . Parts of the walk were a little bit crowded but it is a very popular route , we used this company before and would highly recommend them .

First Class Operation - We did two walks using Madeira Free Spirit Walks - Ribeiro Frio to Portela and Rabacal to 25 Fountains. Unfortunately, the weather curtailed the Ribeiro walk, however our guide, Suzanna, re-routed us to a lower level to escape the clouds and the rain. This enabled us to fully enjoy a levada which ran further down the valley and through a number of farms and small villages. The Rabacal walk, was stunning and in perfect sunshine. Suzanna was the guide again and she kept us fully informed on the local history, plants and fauna. She also had a good sense of humour and could mimic a number of birds and animals to good effect. A great choice.

WET! Great guide, terrible weather. Take spare dry shoes if bad weather as you will be wading. - Prepare to get wet if it’s bad weather.
We started the walk with hailstones and 4degree temperature even though the weather in Funchal was sunny.
Alvaro our guide was fun and informative, with a quick stop at a cafe and shop on the way for coffee and any food needed for lunch, also a stop after for coffee and Poncha.
The walk itself was unfortunately very wet with us having to wade through a tunnel shin deep in water. Even expensive waterproofs and boots weren’t enough to keep the feet dry.
Would be a great walk with Alvaro on a nice day but felt a bit rushed as we were all cold and wet and the views were shrouded in mist.
Obviously the weather was out of their control and would recommend the company.

Rabacal 25 walk - This is the second time we have been on a levada walking tour with Madeira Free Spirit Walks - both have been fantastic.
Pick up was prompt and conveniently right outside our hotel door.
During the walk, Maria shared many interesting facts about fauna and flora in the levada and their history too. The scenery was stunning and certainly a highlight of our stay.
Thank you Maria and also to our lovely driver for helping us make a wonderful holiday memory, you made a great team - I’m sure we will be back.

Fantastic trip - great way to experience the Lavadas - Fantastic trip with a great guide - learnt so much about everything Madeiran! He really looked after us end to end. Lovely way to experience the Lavadas. I’m not great with heights so was a little nervous, but coped with this no problem. Morning and afternoon comfort break worked well too. Will definitely book with this company/ guide again - thank you!

Very nice hike - Very nice tour, with many waterfalls, up stairs, one of the most popular tours, so there was also quite a lot going on on the trails. Still highly recommended. And we had a lot of fun with our friendly and sympathetic tour guide.
