- Park and National Palace of Pena - The stunning Palácio da Pena is a prime example of 19th-century Romantic revivalism in Portugal.
Perched atop Monte da Pena, the palace was constructed on the site of an ancient monastery of the Order of St. Jerome. It was the brainchild of Dom Fernando of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who married Queen Dona Maria II in 1836. Enchanted by Sintra, he purchased the convent and surrounding land to create a summer residence for the royal family.
The king consort embraced Portuguese architectural and decorative styles for the palace, reflecting the revivalist trends (neo-Gothic, neo-Manueline, neo-Islamic, neo-Renaissance). He also designed a magnificent English-style woodland park around it, featuring a diverse array of exotic trees.
- Centro Historico de Sintra - This charming town at the base of the mountain range shares its name and boasts unique features that earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation. A special category, “cultural landscape,” was created to recognize its natural beauty and historic structures. The lush mountains are part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
- Quinta da Regaleira - Located near Sintra’s historic center, Quinta Regaleira is one of the town’s most intriguing attractions.
The palace of Quinta da Regaleira was constructed in the early 20th century by millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), who fulfilled one of his dreams with the assistance of scenographic architect Luigi Manini (1848-1936). Surrounded by verdant vegetation, the Palácio da Regaleira is a captivating discovery.
Built in a Romantic revivalist style, the palace imitates Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural and decorative forms, infused with mythical and esoteric symbolism.
A highlight is the Capela da Santíssima Trindade (Chapel of the Holy Trinity), where visitors can descend a spiral staircase into the crypt to find the monumental initiation well, leading through a grotto to a hidden lake amidst the gardens.
- Parque e Palacio de Monserrate - A hidden treasure of Sintra, Monserrate Palace is a Romanticist marvel. Originally built as a chapel in 1540, it was transformed into a neo-Gothic house in 1790. Its golden era began in 1856 when English millionaire Sir Francis Cook constructed the current palace, merging Gothic, Indian, and Moorish styles. Surrounded by a botanical garden with 3,000 exotic species, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Today, it stands as one of Portugal’s most diverse and stunning examples of 19th-century art.
