- Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade, and worship.
- Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter stands prominently on the north side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius as a backdrop. When the colony was established in 80 BC, the temple was extensively renovated to become a Capitolium, featuring statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to those in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility.
- Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side. Niches in the side wall hold copies of two marble statues, a female and a male warrior, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely of an emperor, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. To the left is a meeting room for a sacred board, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
- Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. It was bustling with shops, workshops, cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants.
- Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Forum Baths date back to the colony’s founding by General Silla in 80 BC. Separate entrances led to women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section included an apodyterium (dressing room), tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). The baths suffered significant damage during the 62 AD earthquake.
- Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most renowned brothel in the ancient Roman city, noted for its erotic wall paintings. “Lupanar” is Latin for “brothel.” The Pompeii lupanar, also known as Lupanare Grande, employed mostly Greek and Oriental slave prostitutes, who charged between two and eight Asses (a glass of wine cost one As).
- Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun, built in the 2nd century BC, was one of Pompeii’s largest and most impressive private residences, showcasing numerous artworks. It is one of the most opulent aristocratic homes from the Roman Republic, offering more insight into the era than many archaeological finds in Rome.
- Teatro Grande - The Large Theater of Pompeii, constructed by the Romans on a hillside, utilized the natural depression to create a grand auditorium divided into five sectors. The stage hosted Greco-Roman tragedies.
- Basilica - Covering 1,500 square meters, the Basilica was the Forum’s most lavish building, used for business and justice administration.
