From the 8th century, it was occupied by Muslims, who had taken it from the Visigoths. During the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, D. Afonso Henriques captured Almourol in 1129 and entrusted it to the Order of the Temple.
- Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais - The original church dates back to the 12th century, under the leadership of D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, serving as a burial site for the Freires. The current church, from the 13th century during the reign of D. Afonso III, is a prime example of national Gothic architecture. Its design served as a model for other religious structures, both cathedrals and convents, across the country.
- Tomar - Founded by Gualdim Pais, a Templar master, in 1160, the city offers a delightful walk around its historic streets.
A lunch break will be taken at this location.
- Igreja de Sao Joao Baptista - Located in the heart of Tomar, the Church of St. John the Baptist was initially constructed in the 15th century and later rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1520, King D. Manuel elevated the Church to a Collegiate, integrating the chapels of the royal patron.
- Convento de Cristo - The Convent of Christ in Tomar was associated with the Order of the Templars. Founded in 1162 by the Grand Master of the Templars, Don Gualdim Pais, it retains the legacy of these knight monks and their successors, the Order of Christ, who made it their headquarters. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Aqueduto dos Pegoes - This is one of Portugal’s largest and most impressive aqueducts. Its connection to both monuments is essential, as it was constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, spanning about 6 kilometers, to supply water to the Convent. Over the years, the lagars had various owners but maintained their original design. At the top of the abbey, the access tower offers a view of the gold cross of Christ and the initial sketches of the project, dating back to the 16th century, overseen by Filippo Terzi, also the master of works at the Convent of Christ.

The Templars played an important role in all the great eras and battles in Portugal, from the founding of the country with D. Afonso Henriques to the Discoveries. The headquarters of the Templars and, later, of the “Order of Christ” settled in Tomar, making this the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world.
